The rest of us spent the afternoon listening to the radio and playing canasta on the floor of Corinne’s basement, where it was cool. We talked about the beacher Saturday night, trying to imagine what the high school kids did at them. We thought there might be dancing and when “Loco-Motion” came on the radio, we interrupted our game to jump up, turn the volume up, and practice the moves we’d seen on television dance shows. We kept dancing for the next song and the next, “Rock Me Gently” and “Haven’t Got Time for the Pain.” When Olivia Newton-John’s “I Honestly Love You” came on, we sang along, closing our eyes tightly so we could feel the vibrations of our vocal cords better. We imagined ourselves at the beacher, our bare feet sinking into cool sand. In our dark world we were all gliding and smoothness, and we pictured people moving around us who looked something like the images in the magazines, although they also resembled our older brothers’ and sisters’ friends.
